Dr Bueno’s Curriculum Vitae

José Luis Bueno is a physician specializing in Haematology and Haemotherapy. He has a Master’s degree in Research Methodology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and a Master’s degree in Molecular Oncology from the National Centre for Oncological Research (CNIO) in Spain.

Dr Bueno currently leads the Department of Transfusion, the Non-transfusional Haemotherapy Unit, the Unit for Therapeutic Apheresis and Haematopoietic Stem Cell Collection at Puerta de Hierro-Majadahonda Teaching Hospital.

He is a member of the Transfusion, Transplant and the Multidisciplinary Unit for Advanced Therapy (UMTA) Committees at Puerta de Hierro Hospital, and is an associate Professor in Haematology at the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid (UAM). He was also spokesman for the Scientific Committee for Transfusional Safety of the Spanish Ministry of Health from March 2013 to March 2020.

Dr Bueno is one of the Spanish peer reviewers for the journals Transfusion and Vox Sanguinis. He has published over 20 papers in international journals and given conferences in national and international fora in the field of Haemotherapy.

He was an auditor of the National Entity for Accreditation (ENAC), working on national audits in the field of transfusion, and was also responsible for implementing the JACIE standards in the Stem Cell Collection Area of the Haematopoeitic Transplant Unit of Puerta de Hierro-Majadahonda Hospital in 2014 and 2020. Also, in 2020 headed the implementation of the Transfusion standards (CAT) in the Hospital Transfusion Service.

Since 2012, Dr Bueno has collaborated on international consultancy projects in Europe, Africa and Latin America for the implementation of safe blood donation and transfusion programmes.

In May 2013 he founded the biotechnological company PRoPosit Bio, for which he is scientific director and CEO.

Dr Bueno is involved in various projects and patents related to transfusion, non-transfusional haemotherapy and cell therapy in the fields of human and veterinary medicine.

In 2020, and against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Bueno was the coordinator of Working Package 2 to obtain hyperimmune plasma from recovered COVID-19 patients. He was also a member of the Steering Committee for the Multi-center, Randomized Clinical Trial of Convalescent Plasma Therapy Versus Standard of Care for the Treatment of COVID-19 in Hospitalized Patients, also known as the ConPlas19 Study that was published in September 2021.

Dr Bueno was head of the Apheresis, Extractions, Fractioning and Distribution Areas of the Red Cross Transfusion Centre in Madrid from 1997 to 2007 and medical director of the PIVOTAL clinical trials company from 2007 to 2008.
